ADOLESCENT
SERVICES
Catholic Charities of Chemung County’s
Adolescent Services is a multi step program designed
to prevent young adults transitioning out of foster
care from becoming homeless. In New York State it is
estimated that 1/3 of this “at risk population”
becomes homeless within one year after leaving foster
care. Program assistance is offered to adolescent’s
ages 16-21 who have been in foster care for 90 consecutive
days. Following an individual assessment our Phase I
step also known as Supervised Independent Living Program
(SILP) provides safe, clean apartment living within
the community that includes 24-hour on site Supervision.
Catholic Charities of Chemung County’s
Supervised Independent Living Program is not a detention
center for wayward youth. Our goal is to minimize the
chance that young adults coming out of foster care will
become homeless. We provide quality case management
services that include essential instruction on daily
living skills and life skill services. We assist individuals
with basic skills in areas to include social development,
money management, self care, career development and
how to access community resources. Additionally, we
provide support for educational, vocational and health
care planning. Following successful completion of the
Phase I step individuals transition into the final Phase
II, which allows them to live in apartments scattered
throughout the community with staff assistance to manage
daily activities.
The goal of this unique residential
service is to provide a progressive level of support
to adolescents transitioning from foster care.
